NEWS! Amy and Jessica had 8 babies on Friday 26th April! Today, 30th of April, they all seem to be fine. Amy's back is healing up ok now. Keep you updated! We now have 16 hamsters in the house!

I (Dan) bought Dav two female Roborovski dwarf hamsters for her 22nd birthday on the 2nd of Feb 2002. She named them Amy and Jessica. Amy certainly appeared to be the livelier of the two, and the more outgoing, while Jessica would hang out more in the tubes and coconut shell they live in.

Six weeks later, on the 17th of March, we saw some movement in the coconut despite Amy and Jessica both being 'out and about'. Yep - we have baby hamsters! Amy is a bloke!

I have to admit that we were VERY excited, and I expect most people feel that way, although probably to a greater extent, when they find out that they are unexpectedly going to have a baby... Embarrassing!

One month on, as I write this, Amy is still called Amy, despite a few efforts to rename him. There were initially six babies in the litter, but two have died, for no apparent reason, other than being the weaker babies. So we now have four healthy, curious and hungry babies which are about to be re-homed.

Two and a half weeks after the first litter was born, Davina became convinced that Jessica was pregnant, and she certainly did look rather large! We thought we had better buy a second cage to be able to move the first litter into when the second litter came along.

Last Saturday, 6th of April, we went out and got the new cage. When we arrived home, the second of the two babies that died was dead. So we went out and buried it. When we came in, we prepared the new cage, and started taking the babies out of the first cage to 'try them out' in the new one. As we were pulling them out, we suddenly noticed a bunch of little pink babies in the nest! The new litter had just been born!

The new litter are now just over a week old, and are fully covered with hair. In about 5 days, they should start opening their eyes and venturing out of the nest. There are six of them, and they all look well and healthy.

We had our four first babies sexed this weekend. Two people separately confirmed that there are 3 boys, and 1 girl.

And that pretty much wraps up the news... Keep coming back, and remember to check out these photos.
